Extruder Operator

SUMMARY: 

The extruder operator’s main objective is safety, quality and production.  The position requires feeding or removing plastic and materials from extrusion machines by performing the following duties:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


Knowledge of operating the extrusion process and downstream equipment.  Being able to go from a cold startup into full production, which includes heating up the extruders and die slowly until they are up to running temperatures.  Knowledge of all extrusion functions.  Be able to set-up the blending system for the resin input, coordinate with the assistant line operator when starting up.

Responsible for the metering and pellet size while in production and making sure that the proper metrics are maintained throughout the shift.  Make necessary extruder adjustments, troubleshoot process problems and inform production supervisor of problems.  Assist or repair the problem.

Make sure that constant quality control is maintained.  Assist in lab test.  Required to do resin output checks.

Monitor resin system, what system is running low or what quantity is left.  Must know how to change resin delivery systems.

Provide relief for assistant operator during breaks.

When head pressures reach alarm limits, the extruder operator must install breaker plates, screen packs and make screen changes on the extruder.  If a screen plate has been changed, the operator must clean the breaker plate.

Cold shutdowns including purging the line and shutting off the appropriate controls.

Knowledge of product ID and nomenclature.

Keep the extrusion area clean and free of safety hazards.

Maintain safe working practices and abide by the company’s safety rules.

Other duties may be assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
One year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Computer proficiency within Windows based environment.  Experienced in Microsoft Office Suite software (Excel, Word, Power Point, Outlook)

Ability to compute basic math to perform the role.

Possess basic mechanical aptitude to troubleshoot machines and perform minor repairs when needed.


LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving a variety of concrete variables in standardized situations.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, and REGISTRATIONS:
Must complete Fork Lift operators training

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, fumes and airborne particles. The employee frequently works in high, precarious places.
